His and Hers Engagement RingsWhether you love them or hate them, you have no doubt heard of them. The engagement in 1997 of English football star David Beckham and Victoria "Posh Spice" Adams took the media by storm. The pair had hooked up the year before at the time when Spice Girls were at their peak, but went on fairly normal low-key dates - going to a pub or the movies, out for dinner, or just going for a drive. They also chatted a lot on the phone. David later said "It felt straight away like we'd always been meant to be together."
The Beckham WeddingThe Beckhams were married the following year, 1999, (Victoria 25, David 24) in an intimate ceremony (29 guests) at the gothic Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. Their 4-month old son Brooklyn was their ring bearer. Victoria wore a crown and tightly fitting ivory wedding dress designed by Vera Wang and David matched her in a cream and ivory suit, but had to later change to a purple suit because Brooklyn threw up on him. The reception was much larger than the ceremony with 437 staff serving about 230 guests who were all asked to dress in black or white. It featured an 18-piece orchestra, wedding cake topped with a risque sculpture of the newlyweds, and finished with a fireworks display. I can just imagine their matching engagement rings sparkling in the light. Apparently, the pair asked for shopping vouchers rather than presents. I guess it would be hard to buy presents for the couple who have everything anyway! Multiple Engagement RingsThe couple's rise to stardom over the years has allowed for an ever-changing array of diamond and engagement rings for trendy Victoria. The couple got engaged when they were young and her first ring fitted where they were at the time, but she now sports a diamond about 8 carats larger, in line with their financial success and Victoria's evolution into a fashion icon. |
